These are the signs of a vitamin D deficiency

In the midst of the corona crisis, a message appeared through various media that vitamin D might protect against corona. Suddenly, people bought massive amounts of vitamin D, in addition to all the hand cleaners, mouth caps and toilet paper. A strange action, because we at VNMshop have known for a long time that vitamin D is essential for a healthy body.

Many Dutch people are walking around with vitamin D deficiency, most likely also among athletes. It is estimated that more than 40% of all women over the age of 50 suffer from deficiency. In addition to women over 50, young children, women who are pregnant, women who walk in veils, the elderly over 70 and people with dark skin color are more likely to have a vitamin D deficiency. Do you not belong to these risk groups, but you only see the inside of the gym? Then you could also have a shortage!

What are the signs of vitamin D deficiency?

When you have a vitamin D deficiency, your body gives certain signals. These differ per person. You can be vitamin deficient when you:

• are fatigued for a long time;
• Feels weaker than usual;
• Something breaks due to a small accident;
• have pain in muscles or joints;
• Muscles tremble a lot or if you often have cramps;
• You often feel lethargy;
• Hyperventilates in a stressful moment;
• Often suffer from night sweats, nightmares or fears;
• Often suffer from bleeding gums.

What is vitamin D good for?

The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium from food. It is therefore very important for the growth and maintenance of strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D is also very important for the functioning of the immune system and muscles. As a result, it is also important for athletes to ensure sufficient vitamin D.

The main source of vitamin D is sunlight. By walking in the sun with bare skin, the body produces vitamin D. Unfortunately, we are outside less and less and we do not have enough sunlight all year round to get enough vitamin D.

You could choose to get vitamin D from food. It is in animal products such as fatty fish and eggs. Vitamin D is also added to cooking and frying oil and butter. To get the recommended daily amount of vitamin D, you unfortunately have to eat so much of these products that it becomes unhealthy. That is why you better choose to ignore it and buy a vitamin D supplement. You can of course find this at VNMshop.

How Much Vitamin D Should I Take Daily?

The Health Council advises that people in the risk groups should take a daily vitamin D supplement. It is recommended to take 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day. However, according to many researchers, this number is too low and people who do not fall into the risk groups can also benefit from vitamin D supplementation. Do you think you have a vitamin D deficiency? Then go to the doctor. Take a vitamin D supplement with a daily intake of 25 mcg for a longer period of time, especially in the winter months. And exercise outside in the summer!
