What is Omega 3?
Fats are often seen as culprits, too much consumption is one of the reasons for diseases of affluence. But we shouldn't look at fats in such a black and white way. There are two different types of fatty acids; omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. As a human being you need both, but in the Western diet we mainly consume a lot of omega-6 fatty acids. This creates an imbalance, which can indeed lead to health problems, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.Omega-3 fatty acids are also called the good fats. There are different types of this, namely ALA, EPA and DHA. ALA fatty acids are mainly found in vegetable products such as linseed and walnuts. EPA and DHA fats are mainly found in oily fish such as salmon and herring. This is because the fish live on algae that contain a lot of ALA, among other things.
Our body does not make omega-3, so we have to get it through food. It is therefore called an essential nutrient. We can get ALA from plant products, which is partly converted into EPA and DHA. However, if you want to make sure that you are getting enough of all three omega-3 fatty acids, you can take a supplement.
